Independence High School 30th Birthday Celebration Scheduled
September 2006 - Independence High School will be holding a special 30th birthday celebration in connection with their Homecoming on November 3. Friends and alumni are invited to join the celebration. They will have memorabilia displays in the new Media Center, tours of the buildings - new and old - and a barbeque at a tailgate party, all before the football game. Special 30-year T-shirts and personalized bricks will be on sale.
In November 2005 many WHS Alumni and Staff
from all 50 years celebrated Washington's 50th Anniversary!

Buy an inscribed souvenir brick...
reading "WHS 1955-2005" (from a demolished
WHS building).
In addition, a new brick will be placed on the pathway
to the office inscribed with your own wording. Cost:

Apollo Grad Chosen in National Search

HHAF winner Alana Dong,
Apollo High School graduate

August 2004 - A 2004 graduate of Apollo High School
is one of seven Outstanding High School Seniors chosen by
the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation to be celebrated at
star-studded events in Miami, Washington, DC, and on national
TV.
Alana Dong, chosen as a 2004 HHAF National YA Winner, was
selected from a pool of 168 regional youth award winners from
across the country and 7,000 applicants who have demonstrated
extraordinary levels of academic achievement, community leadership,
and cultural pride.
Dr. Pepper sponsors the community service award in which
Dong and each National winner will receive a total of $8,000
in educational grants plus a laptop computer. For more information,

Glendale High School Alums Donate To School
Vernon Tuckey
Vernon Tuckey, a graduate of the class of 1929, bequeathed
the interest from a $50,000 annuity to be awarded as
a scholarship for twenty years. This is approximately
$4400 per year in the current market.
Alejandro Pavela, Lucia Luna, Christopher Stuckey and
Kyle Whitney will each receive scholarships of $1100
to be applied to their college expenses for 2002-03.
Mr. Tuckey was a well-known Glendale resident. He retired
from the Federal Bureau of Investigation after fifty
years of service. He returned home to begin a successful
catering service for western bar-b-ques called the "Burnt
Biscuit."

W.D. "Jack" Shawver
The family of W.D. "Jack" Shawver, who attended
Glendale High School from 1932-35, has established a
$100,000 scholarship in his name that will provide assistance
to one graduate throughout four years of college education.
Shawver spent his life developing ranches, farms and
residential communities. At his death he was director
of the Arizona Water Commission, as well as director
of the Central Arizona Project. He was eulogized as
a "gentleman and a man of his word."
The first Shawver scholarship award will go to Socrates
de la Cruz Garcia. He plans to attend Yavapai College,
play soccer and then transfer to a university to study
sports broadcasting. This award could have a value of
$32,000 based upon college financial guidelines.
