Volunteers Supercharge our Schools
by Vicki Johnson, Governing Board

Fall 2003 - In Driving Success, our volunteer helpers
truly 'supercharge' our schools. One of the most enjoyable
board meetings each year is the annual recognition of our
outstanding school volunteers who do so much for our students.
They add that special touch to our athletic and other extracurricular
programs, raise funds for needed improvements and assist our
teachers and support staff in a variety of jobs on and off-campus.
Having been a parent volunteer myself, I know how much hard
work is connected with the many substantial projects that
take place in a high school. School volunteers give a lot
of themselves, but the rewards are many. From pride in a job
well done to that special smile or 'thank you' from a student,
volunteering gives a self satisfaction that makes it all worthwhile.
There are other benefits for parent volunteers. It is widely
accepted that when parents are involved, their children are
more likely to succeed. This is true whether your child is
in first grade or in high school. What can you do at your
high school? Here are a few more suggestions:
You Can Help!
- Sell concessions, take photos or help with athletic awards
banquets
- Chaperone an educational trip or serve as guest presenter
in a class
- Help with bookkeeping and filing
- Sponsor fundraising events or donate items
- Build theater sets for upcoming performances
- Attend school events to show your support of teens' efforts
- Get involved! Ask your school how you can help.
We welcome parental involvement in our high schools. Please
join us in our common goal of Driving Success for our students.

"DRIVING SUCCESS"
School-Community Partnerships are Key to Success
By Kevin Clayborn, Governing Board
Fall 2003 - We of the Glendale Union High School
District firmly believe that ALL students can learn and be
successful. We are proud of the strong community support and
involvement in our schools, and we continue to work toward
developing even stronger ties with business and civic groups.
School-Community partnerships are key to our Driving Success.
Each of our high schools has local businesses and civic organizations
that work together with staff to help students learn and be
successful. We appreciate the added incentives that are provided
by businesses to students who have performed well in school
or outside activities.
One of the great strengths in our curriculum is our series
of authentic school-business partnerships that have resulted
in the opening of viable career pathways for our students.
These partnerships focus on providing students with hands-on
experience in careers that are in high demand. The programs
lead to industry certification and employment in entry-level
positions such as computer networking technicians, certified
nursing assistants and automotive technicians; along with
jobs in culinary arts, fire science and construction trades.
Participating students are often eligible to receive college
credit while still in high school through dual enrollment
agreements. We continue to work with business and industry
to expand our offerings.
We are gratified to learn that many of our graduates have
already begun rewarding careers as a direct result of our
partnership programs. These young adults are continuing their
education while on the job and many are having their college
classes financed by their new employers. The benefits are
many. Our business partners are gaining a new labor pool of
well-educated and locally trained employees from our community.
Our students get an early start on rewarding careers. Our
community, in turn, benefits from a new generation of productive
members ready to meet the 'Choices and Challenges of the Twenty-First
Century.'
We welcome your comments as we expand learning opportunities
for our students.

Board Member Johnson Congratulated

Volunteers Honored by Board
Glendale Union High School District has a long history
of volunteerism and community service. Our high schools
benefit greatly from the contributions of parents and
community volunteers who work with our students throughout
the year. Volunteers help in the classroom, on the playing
field and in a variety of school-sponsored activities.
Each year the GUHSD Governing Board honors a volunteer
selected by each school as a model of outstanding service
to students and staff.
We thank you for your support of our students and our
schools.
