February 2017 – Glendale High School representatives were honored at the Achievement Above All ceremony February 15. The annual event honors a teacher, student, staff member, student group and volunteer who have exemplarily served the Glendale community.

Achievement Above All: Teacher

The Glendale High School Achievement Above All Teacher recipient is math teacher Esteban Parra, who also happens to be a graduate of the school. Mr. Parra also graduated from the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelors in Education with an emphasis in Math and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on technology integration.

He has taught at Glendale for 13 years and is the Girls Basketball coach and leads up the LINK Crew club.

“Daily, I see Mr. Parra reflecting and analyzing different and creative ways to try to engage his students,” Principal Kevin Cashatt said. “He is passionate about ensuring that his students are successful and understands the importance of them being critical thinkers. He always pushes his students to achieve their highest potential.

She will be the first person in her family to attend college. She plans to go to Arizona State University to pursue medical studies.

Achievement Above All: Support Staff Member

Barbara Cole is the Support Staff of the Year recipient. Mrs. Cole serves the campus as a paraprofessional, helping tutor students in math and supporting them in reading.  Additionally, she has taken on the role of assisting in the credit recovery program.

Mrs. Cole is also a member of the school’s site council, serves as part of Glendale’s Blue Ribbon Committee and volunteers for the City of Glendale.

She has a passion for helping and serving others and is looking forward to one day receiving a reading certificate to allow her to teach adult education classes.

“Mrs. Cole is one of the kindest individuals I have had the honor of working with; she has a heart for kids and a passion for ensuring their success,” said Michelle Scott, assistant principal of attendance and discipline.

Achievement Above All: Student Group

There are 25 members of the Cardinal Reporter, Glendale’s high school newspaper. The publication was named this year’s Student Group of the Year. The club is sponsored by Dan McCloy and is proud to have its work not only published in the campus paper but also occasionally in the Glendale Star.

The purpose of the group is to study journalism and produce the school newspaper, which McCloy said is “the rough draft of history.”

Achievement Above All: Volunteer

The Volunteer of the Year shares her time in a unique way. Michele Scheiner helps students brainstorm ideas for and perfect their college application essays.

“Typically, our volunteer experiences are with parents helping the band program with instruments and props or helping raise funds for our different sporting teams,” Principal Cashatt said. “Michele’s experiences are very different in the fact that she has been working with a number of our students on filling out college or scholarship applications through our college push program.”

Mrs. Scheiner meets with students on Wednesdays during late start to help with their applications. She has previously reviewed medical applications at the University of Arizona and is happy to impart her wisdom with Glendale students to help them get to college.
