December 2008 GOVERNING BOARD RECEIVES THE LOU ELLA KLENIZ AWARD

Pictured with Lou Ella Kleinz (center) is Governing Board members (left to right): Kevin Clayborn, Donna Stout, Vicki Johnson, Kathy Jacka and Steve Burke
More than 500 school board members and superintendents representing public school districts throughout the state gathered in Phoenix Dec. 10-12 at the Arizona Grand Resort to celebrate the people and programs in Arizona’s public schools that exemplified excellence in education in 2008.
Among several awards presented, Glendale Union High School District’s Governing Board received the highest award bestowed on any governing body from Arizona School Boards Association. The board was presented the *Lou Ella Kleinz award for demonstrating the most outstanding educational leadership this year. Members of the board are Vicki Johnson (President), Donna Stout (Clerk), Kevin Clayborn, Steve Burke and Kathy Jacka.
Criterion for the award is as follows: Focus on students; Demonstrates progress in achieving goals; Fosters increased parental involvement; Develops collaboration with social agencies and or community group, including other governing bodies; Creates a school community which fosters quality performance and innovation.
The GUHSD board sets the standing for dedication and excellence in education. The five members have diverse backgrounds and divergent opinions on many issues, but they have a strong desire to collaborate and thus to coalesce into an integrated governing entity. Strong leadership from the board has led Glendale Union High School District to unprecedented success in recent years. This includes the passage of bond and override, and most recently, the unification election. Test scores that are improving at a rate greater than cohort districts and the state as a whole. Glendale Union, which had one excelling school in 2004, leaped to seven excelling schools in just three short years. Students are excelling academically (perfect score on the SAT college-entrance exam, multiple National Merit Scholars awarded annually, advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair, winning the Brain Bee, to name a few.) The district is visited throughout each school year by educators throughout the world. Promoted as a model district by NCA CASI, teachers, administrators, authors, top ranking education advisors, and even kings have scheduled visits to watch GUHSD’s learning system in action. From being recognized by U.S. News and World Report as having America’s Best High Schools, to the district’s award winning mentor program, to National recognition for a reading intervention program, to setting state and regional titles in athletics have instilled pride within the GUHSD community.
*Lou Ella Kleinz served as ASBA Executive Director from 1971-1991.

December 2008: At the December 3 meeting, the Governing Board authorized the superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Johnson, to form a Blue Ribbon Citizens' Committee to present recommendations to the Governing Board on whether to call for an Maintenance and Operations Override renewal election and to recommend budget reductions should an election not be called for or if the election should fail. Because of the support from the GUHSD community, the district has been involved in an M & O override since 1990.
