Career Linkages

The past ten years has seen an increase in vocational opportunities for GUHSD students. The number of jobs requiring increased skill levels have increased from 20% in 1950 to over 65% in 2000. This increase in necessary skill levels in the workforce has demanded that students receive job specific training, and early exposure to different jobs can help a student with making career decisions. With this in mind, GUHSD and the local schools have pursued the formation of meaningful partnerships with business and industry and other organizations concerned with a quality work force.

As a district we decided to do everything possible to insure that students in vocational and career preparation programs had access to the most current technology possible to help them prepare for the advanced technology side of this new world of work. We also felt that we needed to design programs and services that created the opportunity for every student to connect to advanced training after high school. This could be the university, community college, technical schools, apprenticeships and other postsecondary options. Finally, all of our research led us to conclude that the district was simply not able on its own to provide students the variety of experiences necessary nor could it afford to implement state of the art programs in all high demand career areas.

The following criteria for partnership development are identified below. The proposed program must:

  • have high standards
  • lead to a GUHSD High School diploma
  • provide career training in the real world
  • connect students to advanced education/training in a career pathway

We are excited to offer creative partnership opportunities with post secondary institutions and business and industry. In addition to career specific training courses, GUHSD offers a variety of programs that enable students to earn post secondary credit while in high school. We invite you to explore your options.

GUHSD currently offers the following career linkages:

Automotive Factory Training Program
Armed Services
Career Work Experience
Child Oriented Career Occupations (COOP)
Cooperative Education (Internships)
Criminal Justice
Culinary Arts
Dual Enrollment (Community College Credit)
Fire Science Program
Hospitality/Lodging Operations
