FUTURE FRESHMAN
January 17, 2008
Future students and parents: We welcome you to the
Glendale Union High School District.
All nine district high schools hosted an information
night for incoming freshman in early January to provide
parents and students with details relating to high school
registration, curriculum choices and extracurricular
activity opportunities.
If you missed the event, school staff will be able to
respond to questions and guide you through the registration
process.
Please contact one of our schools.

AP / Honors / Accelerated Program
The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is a collaborative effort
between motivated students, dedicated teachers, and committed
high schools, colleges and universities. Since its inception
in 1955, the program has allowed millions of students to take
college-level courses and AP exams and to earn college credit
or placement while still in high school. All students enrolled
in an AP class will take the AP exam; Glendale Union High
School District pays the cost of the exam. Click here
to learn more.
Diploma Requirements
To graduate from the Glendale Union High School District,
a student must earn the required number of course credits
and meet the state graduation requirements (AIMS). Students
are eligible to participate in District-sponsored graduation
ceremonies only if they have successfully met all of the graduation
requirements established by the Governing Board and have met
the state graduation requirements (AIMS) specified by the
State of Arizona. The GUHSD will not offer any alternative
form of recognition for those students who have met the District's
graduation requirements but failed to meet Arizona's AIMS
requirements.
AP / Honors / Accelerated Program
What is the AP PROGRAM?
The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is a collaborative effort
between motivated students, dedicated teachers, and committed
high schools, colleges and universities. Since its inception
in 1955, the program has allowed millions of students to take
college-level courses and AP exams and to earn college credit
or placement while still in high school. Each AP course has
a corresponding exam that is administered in May. AP courses
cover the breath of information, skills, and assignments found
in the corresponding college course. Last year, one campus
administered 235 exams to 135 students in 10 different subject
areas. Except for Studio Art, which is a portfolio assessment,
AP exams contain multiple-choice questions and a free-response
section (either essay or problem-solving). All students enrolled
in an AP class will take the AP exam. The Glendale Union High
School District pays the cost of the exam.
The Advanced Placement Program is a 40 year old program that
develops challenging college-level courses for high school
students. At the end of these courses, in May, Advanced Placement
exams are administered. Students may choose to send their
test scores to colleges that have policies for granting course
credit for AP tests based upon pre-determined minimum scores.
The benefits of participating in an Advanced Placement course
are multiple. Through these courses the students will:
- have the opportunity to earn free college credit.
- earn one extra honor point for each AP course taken.
- experience a college-level course in a relatively safe environment.
- learn first-hand what it takes to be successful in college-level
courses.
Students who enroll in an AP course should possess the following
characteristics:
- self-directed learners
- well developed work ethic
- earn 1’s or 1’s and 2’s in all prerequisite
courses
- strong reading comprehension skills

SAMPLE EDUCATIONAL PLAN - not all courses are offered
