Back to School Event

Back to School Event
August 2010 - GUHSD recently held their annual Back to School event to kick off the new school year and to welcome back teachers. In honor of the district’s centennial celebration this year, the event was held in Glendale High School’s old gym—going back to where it all started. This was the first of many events to be held this year in celebration of the district turning 100 in 2011.

Approximately 750 teachers gathered to hear speeches, catch-up with colleagues, and get ready for another great school year. Recognition was paid to the 215 teachers who are alumni of the district that have returned to their roots to inspire the next generation of high school students.

Mr. John Croteau, Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, was the emcee for the event. Students from Glendale High School’s NJROTC program, under the command of Captain Michael Isban, presented the colors. All nine of the district’s vocal music teachers performed THS’s Dana Graybeal’s arrangement of the National Anthem. Each school tried to out-cheer the others as each fight song was played. The band the Swamp Coolers, made up of former teachers and alumni, entertained the teachers. Teachers enjoyed speeches from Mr. Kevin Clayborn, GUHSD Governing Board President; Mr. Estevan Carreon, GUEA President; and Dr. Jennifer Johnson, Superintendent. The speeches all emphasized the district Core Values that “all students can learn” and that “teachers make the difference” by striving to give every student their very best to ensure academic success. Teachers and administrators walked away inspired to leave a legacy of learning, achievement, and excellence.
