SHS Band Receives Generous Surprise
January 2011 - During their regular class period, the Sunnyslope High School concert band was recently surprised by some special guests. Representatives of Pyramis Global Advisors, Fidelity FutureStage, and Fidelity Investments were in the SHS band room to surprise the students with $25,000 of donated wind instruments to replace old ones and help the program continue growing. GUHSD Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Johnson, Sunnyslope Principal Linda Whitehead, and Assistant Principals Eric Zimmerman and Steve Ducey were all present along with Band and Orchestra Director Andy LaRusch to accept the instruments. Students were handed the new instruments by the guests from Fidelity while cameras from Channel 12 and Channel 3 captured the surprise and joy of everyone present. In total, the band received 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, an alto saxophone, 4 trumpets, 2 euphoniums, a concert tuba, drums, and other equipment to help their program continue its trend of growth.

When asked about the impact of the instrument donation on his program, Andy LaRusch commented, "I can say for my students, playing on a quality instrument contributes to the personal satisfaction, dedication, and continued participation in music. It has been so much fun to watch my students with renewed joy toward what we do here. In addition, having an outside organization such as FutureStage donate such a large number of instruments helps students see that fine arts are a valuable pursuit, worth investing time and energy toward."
