THS Track Dedication

THS Track Dedication

March 2011 - Recently the Thunderbird High School Track was dedicated to Coach Carl Riney during the first home track meet of the season.

Coach Riney has been on Thunderbird’s campus for 38 years. To put 38 years in perspective, Carl was among the first stable of coaches at Thunderbird High School and while many of his contemporaries have retired, Carl presses forward, training a new generation of coaches and students. He is a bridge spanning multiple generations of Thunderbird.

Just this year Coach Riney has touched the lives of 60 Varsity Football Players, 17 JV Basketball Players, 35 Cross-Country Runners, and 226 athletes in track.  That is a total of nearly 340 student-athletes.  If you multiply that number times 38 years of coaching, that is nearly 13000 student-athletes over the course of his career as a coach that he has had an impact on.

The following individuals spoke: Phoenix City Councilman Bill Gates, Dr. Jennifer Johnson, Superintendent and former Thunderbird High School Principal, Clyde Volz, retired track coach and longtime AIA track official, Dave Doerrer, retired Thunderbird High School teacher and track coach, Jonathan Parker, Assistant track coach, Thunderbird Teacher, graduate of Thunderbird and former student athlete of Carl Riney's, Matt Belden, Thunderbird Principal.

A reception followed the track meet where cake was served.  Numerous former student athletes turned out to support Carl on this special evening.
