GUHSD Poetry Contest
May 2011 - Cortez High School recently hosted a Celebration of Poetry, an event that celebrates outstanding poets from across the district. Winners of the annual district poetry contest were announced. Students, parents, and faculty enjoyed readings from select winners and refreshments at the event.

Both the event and contest include entries from students in all grades of English classes as well as foreign poems from students in the English Language Learners (ELL) program. Below are the names of the first place winners in each category. Thank you and congratulations to all the young poets that participated.

English Language Poem Winners:
  • 9th Grade - Glitter Glue by Claire Kroeger (Teacher: Sally Doocey, Sunnyslope)
  • 10th Grade - The Canyon by Mary Barnes (Teacher: Deb Hoff, Moon Valley)
  • 11th Grade - No Phoenix by Kelly Kottmer (Teacher: Tricia Parker, Sunnyslope)
  • 12th Grade - Fifth Grade by Jasmine Fuller (Teacher, Patricia Bohmaker, Sunnyslope)

Foreign Language Poem Winners:
  • 9th Grade - Dreams by Yaritza Escobar (Teacher: Lisa Wakefield, Greenway)
  • 10th Grade - Smiling Home by Paola Sanchez (Teacher: Deb Hoff, Moon Valley)
  • 11th Grade - Where I Was by Linh Le (Teacher: Robin Lewis, Glendale)
  • 12th Grade - Adore by Hay Da (Teacher: Rachel Svardal, Cortez)
