Washington High School opened for the 1955-56 school year with 20 faculty members, 45 seniors and a total enrollment of 650 students. Mr. Mel Zinser was the first principal. Originally it was planned to house only grades 9, 10 and 11 that first year, but there was such a demand for a senior class by students in the area that it was decided to let seniors enter. The new facility was to accommodate 500 students, but saw 650 register by opening day.
