College Board Honors GUHSD For Being National AP District of the Year

GUHSD Recognized For Being National AP District of the Year
January 2013- The College Board recently recognized Glendale Union High School District for being the National Advanced Placement District of the Year, among medium-sized school districts. During that past two years, 400 more GUHSD students have signed on to take AP courses. Among the students taking AP courses at GUHSD, 51% scored a 3 or higher on the AP exams during 2012.

While addressing GUHSD staff, AP teachers and AP students at a celebratory assembly, Trevor Packer, Senior Vice President of AP and College Readiness for College Board called the results astonishing. "In just two years time, you've added 400 students and the scores have gone up at a higher rate and to a larger degree than any other school district in the country and you serve a higher percentage of underserved, minority students than most districts nation-wide," said Packer. Packer says adding more students to AP courses and having more of them take the AP exams, almost always ensures results will go down. In Glendale Union's case, the results were the opposite. Packer compared the accomplishment to adding 400 untrained athletes to the Olympic swim team and yet, winning.

Each GUHSD school principal received a plaque to commemorate the achievement. Packer also presented Superintendent, Eugene Dudo, with a $10,000 check.

For Jonathan Parker, a Thunderbird High School AP US History teacher, who presented at the assembly, the award is the icing on the cake, symbolizing the hard work each AP teacher and student has put forth to improve the district and themselves.

"The recognition from the AP College Board is particularly gratifying because this is not an award we pursued. Rather, this is an award that found us for what we do everyday," stated Parker.
