June 2017 – The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board will meet Wednesday, July 5 to vote on the budget and an appropriation to increase teacher salaries by 1.06 percent.

The 2017-18 budget passed by the Arizona legislature includes an appropriation for a 1.06 percent teacher salary increase in fiscal year 2018. This appropriation is provided based on a district’s total payroll for teachers (salary and employee related expenses) in the current fiscal year. The appropriation will not be adjusted for inflation. The appropriation:

  • Provides a 1.06 percent salary increase for teachers who taught at a district or charter school in Arizona during school year 16-17 and continue to teach at a district or charter school in school year 17-18.
  • Stipulates the 1.06 percent raise shall supplement, not supplant, any salary increase from the district or charter.
  • Includes funding for the employer share of related costs such as ASRS, or other related employee retirement systems, and FICA.
  • Requires governing boards to vote separately on teacher salary increases and ensure that teachers are notified.
  • Requires a public hearing notice for the above hearing to be posted on ADE’s website and the LEA’s website, if applicable.
  • Requires governing boards to attest the budget meets these requirements to receive funding.
  • Requires districts to submit adopted budgets to ADE for the purposes of funding distribution.

Please note that only certified classroom teachers are eligible for the 1.06 percent allocation. Counselors, media center directors, social workers, purchased services personnel (i.e. contracted through Smart Schools) and substitutes are not eligible for this funding. The district expects the state to fund the appropriation in December 2017, following which the district will disburse the money to eligible teachers.

The Governing Board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. July 5 at the GUHSD Administrative Center, 7650 N. 43rd Avenue, Glendale.
