Cortez Boys Soccer Wins State Championship

Cortez Boys Soccer Wins State Championship
February 2010 - Won by a game-winning penalty kick, Cortez recently claimed the title of State Soccer Champions Class 4A Division II . This win was especially sweet since the team competed in last year's championship game but lost. This is the school's first athletic state championship in over 22 years.

As part of the school celebration, the championship team was treated to a delicious steak luncheon, complete with chips and salsa, salad, baked potato, corn on the cob, and more prepared by Cortez's own culinary department. Each athlete received a personalized framed photo of the team created by the principal's administrative assistant, Debbie LeClair, and oversized "favor-type" rings to wear until the real ones arrive. Team captains presented soccer balls personally signed by the players to the winning coaches. Coach Jose Corona and assistants Antonio Vazquez and Chris Pistoia presented the players with school and region certificates, pins, and varsity letters. In addition, Corona and Vazquez presented, on behalf of the team, a bouquet of roses to school Athletic Director Sheri Anderson, culinary teacher Debbie Raatz, culinary assistant Evangelina Yanez, and math teacher Michelle Yanez for the wonderful lunch.
