Cortez Wins Grand Prize in Bookmans School Challenge

Cortez Wins Grand Prize in Bookmans School Challenge
March 2012- Representatives from Bookmans visited Cortez High School during its last assembly of the year to present the school with a check for $15,000, the grand prize in the Bookmans School Challenge.

Elementary, middle, and high schools from around the state applied to be a part of the competition, and ten were chosen to be semifinalists, including Cortez. These ten schools were then given flip cameras and were asked to produce a video stating why they should win the grand prize. The videos were uploaded to YouTube, and people were asked to vote for the school they felt was the most deserving on Facebook.

After a week of campaigning, Cortez received the most votes, automatically moving to the final round, along with Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy and Manzo Elementary School. A panel from Bookmans visited each school and ultimately named Cortez the winner of the $15,000 grand prize.

According to the school, the money will be used to add new books to the library and purchase technology that will promote literacy.

The Bookmans School Challenge aims to instill the love of reading in Arizona's students and encourage life-long learning by connecting with schools such as Cortez.

Congratulations, Cortez!
