Glendale Teacher Wins Matt O. Hanhila Inspirational Educator Award

Glendale Teacher Wins Matt O. Hanhila Inspirational Educator Award
May 2012- Glendale High School theater teacher and performing arts department chairperson Vanessa Bernal was recently honored by Glendale Rotary Club with the Matt O. Hanhila Inspirational Educator Award.

Vanessa was chosen for her dedication to her students and her campus. She remains very busy at GHS, producing school plays and competition pieces, acting as the performing arts department chairperson, and sponsoring the Link Crew.

Principal Deborah Jordan says that students, faculty and staff members, and administrators enjoy working with Vanessa because of her innovative ideas and full commitment to each project she takes on. With the Link Crew, she is constantly coming up with new activities to get freshmen involved on campus, and with her theater students, she creates costumes, facilitates rehearsals, and pushes her students to try challenging, interesting material.

When given the chance to speak about her award, Vanessa remained humble and thanked the students, fellow faculty members, and administrators who help her be her best each day. She also thanked her parents, who attended the meeting to see her receive her award.

This award is given to an outstanding Glendale teacher each year in the memory of long-time teacher and coach, Matt O. Hanhila. Past winners of note include 2011 Arizona Teacher of the Year, Amanda McAdams, who also attended the Rotary meeting during which Vanessa received her award.

Congratulations, Vanessa Bernal!
