Student Artwork on Display at Annual District Art Show
April 2012- At the annual District Art Show, the best work of GUHSD’s student photographers and 3D and 2D artists is put on display for several days and is judged by a panel of professional artists.

At this year’s opening reception, parents, students, and faculty, staff members, and administrators from all over the district visited the Nielsen Design Center to view the work of some very talented students. From ceramic elephants, to charcoal self-portraits, to photographs, there was a variety of pieces to admire. The event was catered by Thunderbird’s culinary students, and the Thunderbird jazz band and violin duet provided entertainment.

Prior to the event, a panel of professional artists came to assess the artwork and choose four winners in each of three categories: 2D, 3D, and photography. The panel included Rocco Menaguale, owner of Rocco Designs LLC, Ryan Rose Lopez, a photography student at The Art Institute of Phoenix, Aaron Pierson, owner and founder of Jambi Media and co-founder of Private-Eye Studios, and Roland Dahlquist, an award-winning free-lance artist and professor at The Art Institute of Phoenix. The artists chosen by this panel of judges to win awards are as follows:

1st place: Christian Alarcon (Washington)
2nd place: Alexis Fenn (Thunderbird)
3rd place: Mireya Ruiz-Bernal (Moon Valley)
Honorable Mention: Samantha Swartz (Sunnyslope)

An additional award was voted upon at the opening reception, the people’s choice award. Each person who attended the opening reception was given the opportunity to vote for their favorite piece of art. The student who won this award is Eduardo Vera from Apollo for his photograph, "The Beginning."

Gratitude is extended to Mike Nielsen of the Nielsen Design Center and Aaron Pierson and Ryan Rose Lopez at Private Eye Studios for making this event possible. Congratulations to all of the students who were able to display their work.
