GUHSD Recongizes Cortez High School's Achievement Above All Honorees

Chris Schultz was the Achievement Above All teacher recipient for Cortez High School. Chris has been in the mathematics department at Cortez for 15 years where he has taught everything from pre-algebra to calculus. Chris is also the announcer for football games, soccer matches, and track meets at Cortez. Chris has given much of his time to sponsor the SADD club on campus and encourages students to make educated, informed decisions. Chris is a true professional who makes great contributions to Cortez.

Amanda Wahlers was Cortez's student Achievement Above All winner. Amanda exemplifies what it means to be an Achievement Above All student. She is active in Student Council, National Honor Society, and the International Student Exchange. Amanda is in the top 1% of her class and is a member of Peer Mediators, National Hispanic Honor Society, Accelerated Cultural Enrichment, Reading Club, and Theater Club. She is also a National Merit finalist, a Rotary student of the month, and has played tennis for three years. Amanda is truly a leader on Cortez's campus.

Cortez's student group Achievement Above All winner was the Gardening Club. The Gardening Club has beautified the Cortez campus in a number of ways through planting trees, flowers, and other greenery. The club fund raises, purchases, and nurtures plants all over the campus. They also research the best times to plant various plants so that Cortez will remain beautiful year-round. The Gardening Club has certainly made a positive impact on Cortez.

Jerry Cross was the support staff Achievement Above All winner for Cortez High School. Jerry has been at Cortez since 2000 as the athletic trainer and he has always looked out for the best interests of the students. Jerry has poured his heart into working with the students and takes time to train the student athletic training team so they can be ready to assist any student athlete.  Jerry impacts the lives of student athletes and all of Cortez in a very big and positive way.

Cortez's volunteer Achievement Above All winner was Michelle Hill. Michelle was nominated to be the Parent Booster Club president and a School Council Member. She has since become more involved with the theater program and the culinary program. Michelle's volunteering was invaluable in getting several theater productions off the ground and she volunteers her time happily. Michelle's favorite part of volunteering is the feeling you get knowing you helped make a difference and seeing the students accomplish what they previously thought was unachievable.
