On October 15, 2014 the Governing Board took time to honor the Achievement Above All winners for Independence High School's 2014-2015 school year.

The recipient of the Achievement Above All teacher award was Santiago Maldonado.  Santiago is the department chair for Social Studies at Independence and he is also the head football coach. Fellow teacher Christina Frazen says, "Santiago has been the best addition to our Social Studies team.  He is a true team player. He not only connects with adults, but his students as well." Santiago expects only the best from his students and his athletes. He makes the students accountable and they admire him as a coach.

The Independence Achievement Above All student was Breanna Hernandez. Breanna is currently the number one student in the senior class with a 4.72 grade point average. Breanna has never missed a day of high school. Mr. Rodriguez had this to say about her, "Breanna Hernandez is what teachers would call the 'perfect student'.  Not only is she the perfect student but is an above average citizen." She takes great pride in herself and is always willing to lend a helping hand when ever needed. She volunteers for at least two organizations who provide food for those in need.  She was featured on a poster for a volunteer recruitment program called H.O.P.E. which stands for helping others and promoting engagement.

The student group selected to receive the 2014-2015 Achievement Above All award was Student Council. The change over the past few years has been amazing to watch. Mr. Young said this about student council, "I would like to compliment Student Council for all the hard work they put in to trying to improve school spirit. They have implemented changes that have allowed clubs to be involved in the activities here on campus." Student council has been involved with giving back to the community by getting into neighborhood projects like painting houses and doing landscape projects in the community. These young men and women make a positive difference at Independence High School.

The volunteer Achievement Above All award was given to Charyl De Alva. Charyl is one of the most active parents Independence has had the fortune to work with. She has been a tremendous asset to the Independence High School baseball team. Her work in tracking down donations is incredible and very obvious when you see the baseball field at Independence.  She has been able to gather donations of time and materials necessary to make the field safe and beautiful. Unfortunately, Charyl had to be out of town on the night of the award ceremony.
