Greenway High School AAA Award Winners Recognized by Governing Board

Achievement Above All Award Winners at Greenway High School were recognized at the Glendale Union High School District Governing Board meeting on April 1, 2015. The selected Achievement Above All Teacher was Bryan Kestle. Mr. Kestle is a Greenway High School alumnus of the 2002 graduating class with education degrees from ASU and NAU. He has taught at Greenway for five years. As an algebra teacher, Mr. Kestle has gone above and beyond and taken the roles of math intervention specialist, freshman intervention team participant, and is also a co-sponsor of the Best Buddies program. “Bryan is very hardworking, extremely dedicated and a pleasure to work with,” said Math Department Chair Sarah Peterson. “He has been instrumental in the success of Greenway’s math department and is very deserving of this award.” Students say that Mr. Kestle makes learning fun and that he connects math concepts to real world experiences by providing opportunities for students to learn from each other and work as a team.

For the category of Achievement Above All—Student, Greenway High School selected Moriah Johnson. Johnson has been an honors/advanced student throughout her high school career excelling in all classes. “Moriah is an extremely motivated and organized young lady who’s bound for success in anything she does,” said AP Calculus Teacher Cindy Roberts. Ms. Johnson is also a member of National Honor Society, Dance Line, Cheer, and LINK.

The governing board also recognized Greenway High School’s baseball team, headed by Coach Matt Denny, as the recipient of this year’s group award. The team finished the 2014 season with a 29-4 record and a state championship. Coach Denny has been recognized as coach of the year, and the team has been ranked #1 nationally by MaxPreps for Medium Size Schools. The team is recognized as a group not only for outstanding athletic achievements but also for providing opportunities to educate athletes about the importance of family, academics, leadership and community. Student recipients of the group award at the board meeting included players Kona Quiggle and Cody Fisher.

Stacey Jarrell was honored as AAA support staff award winner. Ms. Jarrell has been with Greenway High School for seven years in various capacities including attendance assistant, attendance office lead, assistant to the athletic director, and bookstore manager. As an outstanding member of the Greenway staff, Ms. Jarrell has been recognized for her joyful spirit, work ethic, generosity and attention to detail.

The Achievement Above All Award for volunteer of the year was given to Kim Baker. Ms. Baker has served as Booster Club president for nearly a year-and-a-half and has organized numerous after school activities and gatherings for parents and students. She’s dedicated a great deal of time to finding donations for teachers and programs. In addition, Ms. Baker has planned fundraisers in support of school clubs and organizations. She is recognized for the commitment, energy and compassion evident in all her endeavors.
