Thank you for your service
On May 6 there were nine employees recognized for marking 25 years of service with the Glendale Union High School District, along with the 27 employees who announced their retirement this year.

Twenty-five first and last days of school. Twenty-five years of caring, excelling and helping to prepare students for a lifetime of success.

At a special recognition event held May 6, there were nine employees recognized for marking 25 years of service with the Glendale Union High School District, along with the 27 employees who announced their retirement this year.

These teachers and employees made an impact on the lives of those they touched throughout their tenures. Many went above and beyond to inspire others and give back.

Thunderbird Principal Jeannie Paparella spoke with gratitude to teacher Katherine Devoto.

“The passion for what you’re doing and the knowledge of how you do it is actually a great inspiration to me as an ELL teacher,” Paparella said.

Employees celebrating 25 years of service included Antonio Hernandez from Apollo High; Mark Dersch from Sunnyslope High; Margaret Kerwin-Rich and Lisa Wakefield from Greenway High; Katherine Devoto and Karen Horine from Thunderbird High; Karyn Kleissle from Independence High; Troy Damper from Next Step High; and Brad Nassif from the district office.

For some, commitment to children expanded beyond the classroom.

“Not only does he dedicate his time and heart to students in the district, Troy has become a foster parent to two young adults with special health care needs,” Special Education Director Wendy Collison said of Troy Damper.

Retirees included David Devlin, Kathy Dowell, Jonette Grosse and Samuel Wooldridge from Apollo; Mary Donhauser, Michael Isban, Odette Stanford and Theresa Striedieck from Glendale High; Gail Thimont from Independence High; Kathy Bishop Cook and Suzanne Wilhelm from Moon Valley High; Patricia Bohmaker, Michael Childress, Karen Gueli, Rexford Hazelton, Joellen Kendhammer, Joni Williams and Rhonda Yonkman from Sunnyslope; Christopher Houston and Denise Sawyer from Thunderbird; and Pat Downes, Virginia Rodriguez and Terrie Sansom-Spacone from Washington High.

Retirees from the district office included Superintendent Eugene Dudo and Milton Nielson, Andrew Softley and Diana Voss.

Speaking to Superintendent Dudo, Governing Board President Don DeBusk commended him on his financial stewardship.

“He was instrumental in making sure the dollars were focused on the classroom and the curriculum,” DeBusk said.

These GUHSD employees are thanked for their dedication not only to students but to the parents and community as well.
