February 2016 – Hard work, determination and a positive attitude are three qualities that describe Moon Valley Senior Jose Valenzuela-Gil. And those attributes were key in helping him to earn a QuestBridge Scholarship.

QuestBridge Scholarship recipients are matched with partnering colleges and are offered a financial package that includes coverage of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies and travel expenses. The program seeks out students who are the “nation’s brightest, under-served youth,” according to their website.

Valenzuela-Gil has decided to attend Tufts University. He has been working for this opportunity for a very long time.

“I’ve been dreaming of getting a scholarship throughout my whole life,” he said.

Valenzuela-Gil’s senior year on the Moon Valley campus has been filled with a heavy course load, too. In addition to being a member of the jazz ensemble, every class is either an honors or advanced placement level course.

Valenzula-Gil is a bright and talented student and his hard work is evident, said Lora Zimmer, his physics teacher.

“[He] is one of the rare students that are always the last out of the door because they are making sure that everything is taken care of,” she said.

Valenzuela-Gil knows his hard work and dedication are also a byproduct of his teachers’ dedication to giving him opportunities for learning.

“None of this would have been possible without my teachers,” he said. “I admire each and every one of them because I know that they do not work for a paycheck; they teach because they see potential in us and want to strengthen the next generation.”
