September 2022 – Academic excellence continues as Glendale Union High School District is pleased to announce that the following students from Sunnyslope High School have been named Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program:

Marcus Giorza

Jason Leff

Noah Monroe

Nicholas Pelino

Abby Wolf

On Wednesday, the Governing Board acknowledged the 2023 National Merit Semifinalists during their regular meeting. All Semifinalists received recognition and a certificate of achievement from the GUHSD Governing Board. All those in attendance, including family, friends, and community members, were informed of the process to become a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These five students are considered to be in the top one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Approximately 16,000 high school seniors across the United States were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists for 2023 in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. More than 1.5 million juniors entered the 2023 National Merit Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as the initial screen for program entrants.

All Semifinalists can continue the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $28 million. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Approximately 95 percent of the Semifinalists are to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in Spring 2023.

Congratulations to our 2023 National Merit Semifinalists!
