GREENWAY AAA RECIPIENTS HONORED

The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board spotlighted Greenway High School’s Achievement Above All recipients recently. The Achievement Above All event celebrates excellent members of Greenway, including a teacher, a student, a student group, a support staff, and a volunteer each year. Greenway High School Principal Ed Barnes took the stage to present all recipients to the community, governing board, and superintendent. Each recipient received a certificate or award for their achievements.

Greenway High School’s Teacher of the Year is Delta Apodaca. Apodaca graduated from Apollo High School and continued her education at Ottawa University. She first began teaching at the junior high level 26 years ago. Apodaca then moved down to kindergarten and received her reading endorsement to better understand the process of reading. She has been teaching English at Greenway since 2017.

Apodaca’s student Ivan Anaya says, “Mrs. Apodaca makes her class fun and comfortable, where I can learn and be successful in her class and all others.”

Away from the classroom, Apodaca used to be Greenway’s Head Spiritline coach, earning two national and state titles. Since then, she has stepped down from the head coach role and is now the Junior Class sponsor.

Teacher of the Year

At the top 1% of her class, Xitlali Vazquez is Greenway’s Student of the Year. Throughout Vasquez’s high school career, she has taken 14 courses at the honors/Advanced Placement level, being a part of NJROTC for three years, and is a member of Greenway’s region championship badminton team. Outside of school, Vazquez received the Command Naval Air Force Scholarship, where she spent 8-weeks this summer earning her pilot's license.

Greenway teachers describe Vazquez as a highly motivated, confident student who strives for her best and the best for those around her and brings a smile to class.

Next year, Vazquez plans on attending the United States Air Force Academy to become a pilot.

Student of the Year

This year’s Greenway Achievement Above All Student Group is Key Club. Key Club is a student-led organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others. Members and their club sponsor, Jose Morales, commit many hours of community service and coordinate activities every school year. Greenway’s Key Club has the largest club membership in the valley.

Club sponsor Morales says every year he is amazed by the selflessness of Greenway’s students and their willingness to help others.

College and Career Specialist Glenda Goguen is this year’s Support Staff of the Year. Goguen is no stranger to receiving the Achievement Above All award. She first received the award in 2012.

Goguen began at Greenway in 2005 as a Program Assistant, then became an Attendance Office Assistant, and is currently the College and Career Specialist since 2010. As the College and Career Specialist, Goguen’s role is to be a resource for all students in planning, developing, and achieving their post-high school career and educational goals.

Department Chair Cindy Johansen says, “Glenda plays a significant role within our counseling team, and we couldn’t function as effectively without her. She is always willing to help and couldn’t be more appreciated.”

Support Staff of the Year

Secretary for Friends of Greenway Band and Orchestra Booster, Melissa Ward, is Greenway’s Volunteer of the Year. Greenway Band Director Michale May says, “Having been a member of the band herself in high school, and currently a teacher, she understands what it takes to support a band program from multiple sides and is a crucial member of our team” about Ward.

When asked why volunteering is important to Ward, she said, “Volunteering is a way for me to show love to other people. The kids in the instrumental music programs are always so grateful for anything we do for them. It’s a great way for me to be involved with my daughter’s interests and to serve in a way that keeps me active in her life.”

Outside of volunteering at Greenway High School, Ward volunteers in different areas at her church.
