GUHSD Honored by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve
October 2011- Glendale Union High School District was honored by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for providing exceptional support to its employees who are members of the National Guard and Reserve forces.

GUHSD was nominated for the award by Staff Sergeant Michael Varela, a math teacher at Apollo High School who is also a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.  Dr. Jennifer Johnson, GUHSD Superintendent, was presented the ESGR's Patriot Award at a picnic barbecue at McCormick Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale, hosted by the Arizona Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).

In his nomination, SSG Varela stated, "Glendale Union High School District provides me 30 days of paid leave every two years for deployments and training, replacements for my position without cost to me or my leave time during military duty, and includes me in their e-mail chains for any work-related information while I serve on military duty. They also recognize me on a regular basis during Veterans Day events and through video announcements."

GUHSD was one of seven local employers recognized at the event.  According to an ESGR representative, ESGR is a national organization that encourages employers to support their Guard and Reserve military members, especially during this time when demands on those reservists and their families are heightened.  The awards are presented to employers who go above and beyond the legal requirements to provide that kind of support.
