Secure Learning & Working Environments

Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD) is committed to providing a secure learning and working environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. As part of this commitment, GUHSD implements the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which is a uniform, planned, and practiced response to any incident.

The SRP is an action-based, flexible, and easy-to-learn protocol that organizes response tactics for situations such as weather events, fires, accidents, intruders, and other threats to personal safety. Rather than focusing on specific scenarios, the SRP is built around a standard set of responses: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.

The SRP provides several key benefits:

  • It uses a common vocabulary that all stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, and first responders, can understand.

  • It establishes continuity of expectations and actions for students.

  • It simplifies training and drills for teachers and staff.

  • It creates consistency and predictability for first responders throughout the duration of an incident.

  • It aligns with the growing use of SRP across communities and age groups.

At GUHSD, our emergency plans are adaptable and routinely reviewed to meet the evolving needs of our students and campuses. These plans are regularly updated and practiced to ensure that staff, students, parents, and emergency personnel are well-prepared and confident in their roles.

Each GUHSD campus is supported by a School Resource Officer (SRO) and an active school safety committee that continually evaluates safety procedures. Schools conduct regular fire, lockdown, and evacuation drills. Additionally, SROs participate in quarterly meetings to stay informed about current safety practices and protocols.

All school administrators are trained in incident command, giving them the tools and knowledge to respond effectively in any emergency. Regular site assessments, detailed drill checklists, and enhancements such as campus security camera systems contribute to our comprehensive safety efforts. GUHSD also works closely with local law enforcement to strengthen emergency preparedness and response.
