NJROTC Cadets Receive Top Honors
February 2012- Both Thunderbird High School’s NJROTC cadets, instructed by Chief Warrant Officer Chris Houston and Senior Chief Glenn Shepherd, and Greenway’s NJROTC cadets, instructed by Master Sergeant Paul Smith and Lieutenant Commander Paula Sawdy-Bowes, recently received outstanding ratings from Commander Kenneth Liles, Manager of NJROTC Area 11, for their appearance and performance at their annual military inspections. Thunderbird’s inspection was held on February 15, and Greenway’s was held on January 18.
Both Greenway and Thunderbird’s inspections included the performance of the cadets’ award-winning drills and a pass-in-review, during which each of the platoons marched past a review board consisting of Commander Liles, Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Johnson, Governing Board Clerk Patty Kennedy, and each school's principal. At Greenway, each platoon also performed a comedic jody, or military cadence, which gave them the ability to show their creativity and personal style.

After the cadets performed, Commander Liles spoke about each unit, making sure to note that both schools won the 2012 Distinguished Unit award.  Greenway has won this coveted award four years in a row, and Thunderbird has won it for the second year in a row. Both NJROTC units continue to be among of the best in Arizona.

Cortez High School's NJROTC cadets, instructed by Chief Warrant Officer Dan Vass and Command Master Chief Steve Bowes, were visited earlier this month by Phoenix's Navy Recruiting District Commanding Officer, Commander Derek Wessman, for their annual military inspection.

Each of the unit's 124 cadets was carefully inspected head-to-toe by Commander Wessman, who scored them on their adherence to uniform and appearance guidelines.  The entire unit then performed a pass-in-review, where Commander Wessman assessed their skills gained throughout the year.

The unit was given an overall score of outstanding upon completing the inspection. Several cadets were also given individual honors and awards.

Congratulations to all of the cadets on a job well done!
