2019 National Merit SemifinalistsSeptember 2018  Glendale Union High School District is honored and proud to announce its 2019 National Merit Semifinalists. The academically high performing students include Independence senior Alexander Sigg; Sunnyslope seniors Jeremy Becker, Zoe Friese, Derek Gemar, McKenna Kellner and Michael Perry; and Thunderbird senior Danielle Zylstra. The semifinalists were recognized and presented with a certificate of achievement by the GUHSD Governing Board during its Sept. 19 meeting.

National Merit Semifinalists are chosen every year in September from 1.6 million entrants across the United States. Out of the 50,000 high school students with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores, approximately 16,000 pupils are notified that they have qualified as semifinalists.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must then fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the prestigious Merit Scholar title.

Congratulations to our 2019 National Merit Semifinalists!
