GUHSD Governing Board Honors Special Programs and District Office Achievement Above All Recipients
The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board recently recognized four exceptional individuals whose dedication, compassion, and contributions have made a lasting impact on students, staff, and the broader school community. This year’s Achievement Above All recipients from Special Programs and the District Office represent the very best of GUHSD—passionate educators, hardworking support staff, and an outstanding student who exemplify excellence in action.
Carly Van Camp – Teacher, Online Learning Academy
Carly Van Camp, an educator with 14 years of service in GUHSD, was named the Achievement Above All Teacher for Special Programs. Carly’s journey began on a traditional campus, where she taught science and coached multiple sports, including Badminton, Girls Soccer, and Softball. Her impact extended beyond the classroom, inspiring students through her leadership, energy, and enthusiasm.
Now in her third year at the Online Learning Academy, Carly continues to innovate and uplift. Known for her contagious energy and creativity, she plays an instrumental role not only in teaching the curriculum but also in shaping and improving it to better engage students. She brings learning to life—even in a virtual environment—through thoughtful, hands-on experiences.
Carly's colleague, Science Department Chair Andi Raab, summed it up best:
“Carly exemplifies what it means to be a truly supportive educator. She greets every student with a warm smile and consistently invests time in building meaningful relationships. She brings a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and collaboration that strengthens our team and enhances student learning. She is not only a joy to work with but also brings a light-hearted spirit to every meeting—always ready with a bit of humor to lift the room.”
Carly is especially known for her commitment to struggling students, providing tailored interventions and encouragement that help them stay motivated and feel seen. Her dedication and spirit make her a cornerstone of the Online Learning Academy.
Lena Apodaca-Meza – Support Staff, District Office
The Achievement Above All Support Staff award for the District Office was presented to Lena Apodaca-Meza, Employee Benefits Coordinator, who has served GUHSD for over eight years in a variety of administrative roles.
Lena is widely known for her friendly, professional, and service-oriented approach. Whether she’s assisting employees with benefits questions or taking on new responsibilities, her positive attitude and strong work ethic help shape a supportive culture at the District Office. Colleagues describe Lena as empathetic, approachable, and a true “go-getter.”
“Lena brings to her new role a sincere service ethic, empathy, kindness, and approachability for which she is known,” shared one colleague. Another added, “She is a friendly and trustworthy face for a department on which all employees rely.”
Nicknamed “Lena Frapadoca” for her unmatched coffee-making skills, she is just as appreciated for her heart as she is for her humor. Her goal? Simply to serve others better and build strong relationships across the district. Her presence and dedication are a gift to GUHSD.
Emily Merkle – Student, Next STEP
The Achievement Above All Student Award was proudly presented to Emily Merkle from the Next STEP program, which supports students as they transition to independent living and employment.
Emily has excelled in the program, especially through her internship at Baker Wee, a community partner of Next STEP for over a decade. From day one, Emily demonstrated a strong work ethic, the ability to take feedback, and a desire to learn. Her responsibilities have grown from assembling to-go boxes to flipping cakes, packing orders, managing inventory, and more.
Emily now volunteers four days a week and independently rides the city bus to and from her worksite. Keisha from Baker Wee shared,
“Emily is by far the best intern we’ve had.”
Owner Scott added,
“At this point, Emily is just one of the family.”
Emily’s growth and dedication are a testament to her character and the supportive network around her. Her future is bright, and her achievements are truly commendable.
Jamie Perez – Support Staff, Northern Academy
Jamie Perez was honored as the Special Programs Achievement Above All Support Staff recipient for her incredible service at Northern Academy. Known for her kind heart, initiative, and unmatched commitment to students and staff, Jamie has become an indispensable member of the school community.
Jamie supports both inside and outside the classroom—assisting students with reading, offering encouragement, creating engaging activities, and even teaching students how to crochet during breaks. Her ability to balance patience and firmness makes her a role model and a vital part of the instructional team.
“Time and again, Jamie has demonstrated remarkable patience and empathy in the classroom,” said her supervising teacher, Ms. Maniamele.
“She encourages our students to discover their own strengths and inspires them to reach new academic heights.”
Colleagues frequently comment on her work ethic, warmth, and reliability. Mr. Bodjanac noted her habit of checking in and helping wherever needed—even in classrooms not assigned to her—saying she sets “a positive example of kindness, initiative, and service for both colleagues and students.”
From her first role with no prior work experience to now being one of the most respected and cherished members of the Northern team, Jamie Perez exemplifies the spirit of service and dedication that defines GUHSD.
Congratulations to all of this year’s Achievement Above All recipients from Special Programs and the District Office. Your dedication, compassion, and hard work continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and staff.
