Recognizing Dedication and Impact: Thunderbird High School’s Achievement Above All Honorees
The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board celebrated five outstanding honorees from Thunderbird High School for their exceptional service and dedication. Achievement Above All recognizes individuals and groups whose remarkable dedication and service strengthen the Thunderbird community and uphold the school’s standard of excellence in education, character, and spirit.
Teacher Recipient: Lucy Maurer
Lucy Maurer has spent her career inspiring students to develop practical skills, confidence, and a love for the culinary arts. As a graduate of Mercyhurst University, she earned her BA in Family and Consumer Science Education. Before joining Thunderbird High School, Lucy taught Family and Consumer Science at Borman Middle School and Culinary Arts at Tolleson High School. She has been a valued member of Thunderbird High School, teaching all levels of Culinary Arts and Adaptive Culinary.
Lucy’s passion lies in equipping students with real-world skills for independent living, teaching them to cook nutritious, creative meals, and introducing them to new culinary experiences. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom: as a Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) sponsor, she has guided students to earn college scholarships and achieve success in state-level competitions, fostering both personal growth and leadership.
Colleagues describe Lucy as a teacher whose “standard of performance and dedication to student success sets the bar not just for Thunderbird CTE programs but across the district.” She works with students of all levels, from Advanced Placement to the Sensory Integration Program, instilling teamwork, discipline, and culinary expertise. Her unwavering commitment to putting students’ needs first has been a constant source of inspiration.
Student Recipient: Owen St. Clair

Owen St. Clair, a senior at Thunderbird High School, has made a lasting impact through his academic excellence, dedication to athletics, and commitment to supporting others. Throughout his educational journey, he has shown curiosity, perseverance, and a genuine passion for growth. He maintains a 3.9 GPA, placing him in the top 3% of his class, and is an active member of the National Honor Society.
On the athletic field, Owen has served as captain for both the varsity football and volleyball teams, where he’s known for his teamwork and positive influence. His dedication to others extends beyond competition: as a peer tutor in Adaptive Physical Education, Owen works patiently and compassionately with athletes. Coach Price notes, “It has been a joy having him as a peer tutor and partner in Unified PE. He shows kindness and patience toward our neurodivergent athletes, teaching them the skills of our sports while instilling a love for the game and competition.”
Owen’s legacy at Thunderbird is defined by integrity, compassion, and a genuine desire to uplift those around him. Through mentoring, collaboration, and everyday interactions, he has inspired both peers and teachers, leaving a positive and lasting mark on the Thunderbird community.
Student Group Recipient: Thunderbird Marching Band

Under the direction of band director Andrew Torbert, the Thunderbird Marching Band has set the standard for spirit, skill, and perseverance. With Drum Major Vinnie Storer, the ensemble brings energy and pride to every football game, assembly, and community event.
This season, the Orange Crush Marching Band has distinguished itself through remarkable growth and artistry. The group earned second place at both the Mountain Ridge Invitational and the Peoria Invitational, as well as a rating of Excellent at the 2024 ABODA State Semi-Finals. Their performances have continued to improve with every show, reflecting the hard work, discipline, and unity behind the music.
Beyond the field, the marching band plays a vital role in building school and community spirit. Members learn far more than notes and formations; they develop life skills like teamwork, time management, and resilience. Despite the long rehearsals, the students continue to approach every challenge with enthusiasm and a sense of pride. With strong support from band boosters, instructional staff, and the Thunderbird community, this talented group continues to demonstrate that success is built on unity, effort, and a shared passion for music.
Support Staff Recipient: Mario Celaya

At Thunderbird High School, Mario Celaya is recognized for more than just keeping the campus running; he’s known for doing it with a smile, a helping hand, and a genuine sense of pride in his work. A graduate of Casa Grande High School, Mario has spent the past three years as part of Thunderbird’s day maintenance crew, bringing dedication and dependability to every task.
Whether it’s delivering packages, repairing carts, or managing lock and key projects, Mario’s work supports every part of daily life on campus. Plant Foreman Steve Waymire shared, “Mario delivers all the packages and recently learned locksmithing, taking on all our lock and key projects…He’s someone I can rely on. The campus wouldn’t be the same without him.”
Mario’s approach to his work reflects both skill and heart. He takes pride in responding quickly to requests and ensuring that Thunderbird remains a welcoming environment where excellence is achieved every day. Looking ahead, Mario hopes to continue growing with the district and one day step into a maintenance foreman role. His commitment, teamwork, and positivity make him an essential part of what makes Thunderbird feel like home.
Volunteer Recipient: Jenna Parris

Behind every Thunderbird volleyball season is a team of dedicated volunteers, and Jenna Parris stands out as a driving force. As a volleyball team parent and program treasurer, she manages everything from the snack bar and team purchases, all while serving as the team’s enthusiastic cheerleader, supporting players, coaches, and families with unwavering energy.
Jenna’s volunteer work goes far beyond athletics. She has lent her time to help on the first day of school, assisted with the golf tournament auction, supported the girls’ soccer program, and answered every call for parent help from StuGo, always ensuring Thunderbird events are successful and welcoming.
Volunteering is a family affair for Jenna. Through her eight years with the National Charity League, she has served alongside her three daughters, showing them firsthand the value of giving back and the importance of community. Whether cheering from the sidelines or organizing behind the scenes, Jenna’s dedication and generosity make Thunderbird a place where students and families feel supported and celebrated every day.
