District-wide Student Council Conference a Great Success

District-wide Student Council Conference a Great Success
January 2012 - A district-wide student council conference recently held at Apollo High School allowed student council members from all GUHSD schools to come together for a day of workshops, service, and even a guest speaker.

The day began with a welcome from the superintendent and a video featuring photos and video clips of each school’s student council. Apollo also showcased some of their outstanding student performance groups.

An idea share session allowed students to meet with students from other schools and discuss best practices and creative ideas that work at their school. Students continued to learn new ideas by attending a variety of workshops facilitated by student council members and sponsors.

The students also came together to participate in a service project. They assembled about 1,000 personal hygiene kits from items each school had previously gathered. The kits were taken to a local food bank to be distributed to people in need.

Following a lunch grilled by the superintendent’s cabinet, Apollo alumni and local TV news anchor Joe Dana spoke to the students about how his time at Apollo influenced decisions he made throughout college and his professional career.

Everyone participated in a fun talent show that wrapped up the day. Students and sponsors alike thought the conference was a useful tool to enhance each school’s organization. Plans are already underway to hold the event again next year.
