District Gears Up for Back to School

District Gears Up for Back to School
August 2011 - Schools across the district are excited to welcome back 15,000 high schoolers on Monday. Faculty and staff have been preparing all summer to ensure that students will experience the highest possible level of educational instruction and support this year. The schools’ websites are excellent resources for school specific information, like the first week of school schedule, bus schedules, lunch prices, etc.

After weeks of workshops, teachers and staff received a proper welcome back at the district’s annual Back to School rally. Employees from all 9 high schools and special programs filled the Moon Valley gymnasium to gather together to celebrate the beginning of another successful year and hear from speakers from across the district. Inspirational thoughts were shared by Ian Hugh, Governing Board President; Estevan Carreon, Independence teacher and GUEA President; Amanda McAdams, Apollo teacher and Arizona Teacher of the Year; and Dr. Jennifer Johnson, GUHSD Superintendent. Additionally, teachers were entertained by a performance by a band comprised of Washington and Moon Valley teachers with a special appearance by Governing Board President Ian Hugh on trombone.

As the district prepares for the coming year, it is also time to celebrate district achievements from last school year by presenting staff with performance awards. Teachers, staff, and administrators receive performance awards each year that are based on each school’s success in reaching goals and increasing student achievement. Reflecting the district’s emphasis on continuous improvement, the highest possible amount is only awarded to employees at a school that has made significant improvements from the following year.
