Thunderbird Recognizes Achievement Above All Recipients

Special Ceremony Honors THS Teacher, Student, Support Staff Member, Student Group, and Volunteer
February 2013-The GUHSD Governing Board and Thunderbird High School Principal, Jeannie Paparella, recently recognized Thunderbird's Achievement Above All recipients. Each school's event highlights the accomplishments and commitments of a teacher, a student, a support staff members, student group, and a volunteer.

Julie Topp was recognized as Thunderbird's Achievement Above All teacher recipient. Topp teaches a variety of art classes at Thunderbird, including 3-D Design, Advanced Art, Art 1-2, and Art 3-4. She recently opened her own business giving art classes to inexperienced painters. Topp has been involved in many art projects at Thunderbird, including working on the mosaic mural on campus for the past 3 years. She loves to travel and recently attended the Summer Olympics in London. "Most teachers today are working to increase academic excellence, encourage students to become a whole person, and to assist students to become socially responsible. Julie has all those qualities and more. What makes her a great teacher is the passion for excellence that she has for herself and her students," said Thunderbird Principal, Jeannie Paparella of Topp.

Alex Budde was recognized as Thunderbird's Achievement Above All student recipient. Budde ranks in the Top 1% of his class and is involved in Student Government, DECA, National Honor Society and many other school activities. He plans on studying biomedical engineering and eventually becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Budde also loves baseball. He plays on the Varsity Baseball team and has even visited 17 out of 30 Major League Baseball stadiums, with plans to visit all of them in his lifetime. "Alex is a dedicated, hardworking scholar and leader. Alex is the kind of young man that all of us at Thunderbird High School admire. He has many talents, which he has worked hard to develop. Alex has a bright future," said Thunderbird Principal Jeannie Paparella of Budde.

Margaret Auclair was recognized as Thunderbird's Achievement Above All support staff recipient. Auclair is a product of Glendale Union High School District herself, graduating from Apollo High School. Auclair is now the data processor at Thunderbird, though she has worked in a variety of other positions within GUHSD. Auclair has five children and enjoys playing board games with her family, as well as target and skeet shooting. "I can't say enough about the quality of work and the great attitude that Margaret possesses each and every day at work. She is an extremely hard worker and will always get the job done and done right. Margaret can be counted on to fill in when needed and is competent at every post in the front office," said Principal Paparella of Auclair.

The Thunderbird Go Green Club was recognized as the Thunderbird Achievement Above All student group recipient. The goal of the club is to promote and educate students and staff about the environment. So far, the club has created a school-wide recycling program for all recyclables. The group also currently runs the school's clothing closet, which gives students and community members in need, free clothing. Last year, the group collected enough recyclables to supply clean drinking water for 30 people for one year.

Kristena Malmgren was recognized as Thunderbird's Volunteer of the Year recipient. Malmgren serves as the treasurer for the Chief Parent Association and is also President of the Football Booster Club. She also helps with registration at Thunderbird over the summer and with Future Freshman Night. "Thunderbird students have had a richer high school experience because she chose to give of her time, talent, and energy. As a principal, I know that parent support is crucial to a well-run school and much appreciated," said Principal Paparella of Malmgren.
