Independence High School Honors Achievement Above All Winners

November 2013- The GUHSD Governing Board and Independence High School Principal, Rob Ambrose, recently recognized Independence High School's Achievement Above All recipients. Each school's event highlights the accomplishments and commitments of one teacher, student, support staff member, student group, and volunteer.

Mike Walton was chosen to be the recipient of Independence's Achievement Above All teacher award. Mike is the department chair for performing arts at Independence High School. He dedicates long hours to preparing his students for concerts, competitions, assemblies, and football games. Fellow teacher Annie MacLeod said, "Mike is an amazing department chair. He continuously takes care of the needs of all of the performing arts and picks up the slack when one of the shows is coming up  for the department members."

Emily Franco was selected to be Independence's Achievement Above All student recipient. Not only is Emily number one in her senior class but she is also a member of the softball team, the volleyball team, Unitown, Link Crew, National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon, Patriot Pride, and Young Environmentalists. Independence media center director Jodie Donner said of Emily, "She is an impressive and one of a kind student."

Amy Bojorquez was selected as Independence High School's support staff Achievement Above All recipient. Amy is skilled in both English and Spanish making her an invaluable asset to the attendance office. She also translates for staff across the campus and works numerous school events. Amy is an alumni of Independence and coaches the girls' soccer team. Throughout Independence Amy is known as someone who is friendly and always willing to help.

Cross Country was the club chosen to receive the Achievement Above All award for Independence High School. Beginning in July the team was up and running by 6 a.m. and they took second place at the district meet this year. They have run to support Independence's swim, golf, badminton, volleyball, and football teams. Teacher Molly Hunt said of the cross country team, "They are a welcoming group, they inspire the students among them to excel, not only on the racecourse but in the classroom as well. They encourage one another and take great pride in the accomplishments they achieve."

Teresa Cromer was selected to be the recipient of the Achievement Above All volunteer award for Independence High School. Teresa is known as one of the most active parents Independence has had. She is involved with baseball booster club, the patriot stadium club, softball, band, school council, and works concessions at many events around campus. Teresa has also fostered and adopted two children with special needs and spends much of her time outside the school helping others.
